About AVAST

AVAST Software was previously known as Alwil Software, and develops antivirus computer programmes. Based in Prague, Czech Republic it was started by Eduard Kucera and Pavel Baudiš, two computer-technology innovators. In 1988 they developed a programme they called "anti-virus advanced set" (AVAST) which was to remove the Vienna Virus from computers. They later realised, coincidentally, that AVAST meant "stop!" in nautical terms which was very appropriate since they hoped AVAST would become a leader in antivirus software and stop computer viruses in their tracks!

In 1995 AVAST became the first Windows 95 antivirus program and in 1996 it became one of the first three antivirus programs globally to win VB100 awards in all categories. In 2010 it changed its name from Alwil to AVAST Software. In 2011 AVAST was the first company to offer a free antivirus with automatic virtualization.

AVAST have 150 professionals at their headquarters and a dedicated community of enthusiasts around the globe with distribution partners in all markets. Their award-winning software is offered in more than 30 languages. In 2006 AVAST had 20 million registered users which jumped to an astounding 130 million users by 2010.

The Products

The AVAST product line incorporates a range from avast! Free antivirus for home users to top-of-the line solutions for business clients. Home users that shop or bank online and store sensitive data on their PCs are recommended to use avast! Internet Security.

For both SMB and larger enterprises AVAST offers simple controls with the best security available so risk is reduced at every level. For companies with 10 PCs or less avast! Pro Antivirus and avast! Internet Security are recommended and available in special 5- or 10-PC packs. For those needing server protection and that have SBS networks avast! Server Edition and avast! SBS Suite are the answer.
