About Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone is software for computer-assisted language learning (CALL) developed by Rosetta Stone Inc. Its name comes from the original artifact, the Rosetta stone, which was inscribed in multiple languages, and helped Jean-Francois Champillion to decipher Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics. The company's headquarters are in Arlington County, Virginia. The founder of the company, Allen Stolzfus, learnt German through the "Dynamic Immersion Method". This method makes use of images, text and sound to teach various vocabulary terms and grammatical functions without drills or translations but intuitively, the way first languages are learnt. Stolzfus decided to use computing technology (with the assistance of his brother-in-law Dr John Fairfield) to create this learning experience for others to learn their language of choice. It was started in 1992 which is when CD-ROM technology made it possible, and was first called Fairfield Language Technologies. Allen's brother, Eugene Stoltzfus, was brought on board as company President and CEO and they released their software product as Rosetta Stone. In 2006 the company changed its name to Rosetta Stone, Ltd. Allen Stolzfus passed away on 2002 but his innovation continues to inspire the company to this day. The company now has offices all over the world including London, Munich, Tokyo, Seoul, and Boulder Colorado. Their executive offices are based in Washington, D.C.
